Coronet Peak Ski Hire Guide

Hiring gear for Coronet Peak? Here's why picking up your skis or snowboard in Queenstown the night before beats hiring on the mountain — and how to choose the right package for your trip.

If you are heading to Coronet Peak and need to sort out ski or snowboard hire, you have two main options: hire on the mountain at the base building, or pick up your gear in Queenstown before you head up. Both work. But there are some good reasons why most of our customers choose to sort their hire out in town first.

Here is what you need to know.

Hiring On the Mountain vs In Town

Coronet Peak has hire equipment available at the base building. This is convenient if you have forgotten to organise things beforehand, and the staff up there know the mountain well.

That said, there are a few practical advantages to picking up your gear in Queenstown the night before.

No queues on the morning. On a busy day, the hire area at the base building can get congested first thing. Everyone arrives at roughly the same time and wants to get fitted and onto the mountain as quickly as possible. If you have already been fitted and are carrying your gear, you walk straight to the lifts.

Time to get the fitting right. A good boot fit makes a significant difference to how your day feels. Doing this the evening before, without time pressure, means you can take the time to get it right. For families in particular, fitting multiple people at once is much more relaxed when you are not watching the clock.

Performance packages. If you are an intermediate or advanced skier looking for higher-performance equipment, it is worth checking what is available at each location. At Snowbiz in town, we stock sport and performance packages for both skis and snowboards. Having that selection sorted the day before means no surprises on the morning.

First Tracks. If you are planning to do First Tracks at Coronet Peak, which opens at 8am ahead of the main mountain, picking up your gear the night before means you are ready to go the moment you arrive. No delays, no fitting queues before an early start.

Which Package is Right for Coronet Peak?

If you are newer to skiing or snowboarding, a sport package covers everything you need for a great day on the mountain. Coronet Peak has strong beginner terrain close to the base building, with the Meadows lift and magic carpet well set up for learning.

If you are a confident intermediate or advanced skier, a performance package is worth considering. Coronet Peak opens up significantly once you are comfortable on the Coronet Express and exploring the upper mountain — better equipment makes a real difference when you are covering more of the terrain or chasing powder lines.

Not sure which level suits you? We can help with that when you come in for your fitting. A quick conversation about your experience and what you are planning to do on the mountain means you leave with the right gear rather than something you have outgrown.

Hiring for Families and Children

Coronet Peak is a popular choice for families, partly because the drive from Queenstown is short and fully sealed, and the beginner terrain is easy to navigate from day one. If you are hiring for a group that includes children, picking up everything in town the night before removes a lot of morning stress.

Children under five ski and board free at Coronet Peak, and both child and adult hire is available at Snowbiz. Sorting everyone's gear at the same time, in the same place, the evening before means the morning is straightforward — everyone is ready to go when you pull into the car park.

Book Ahead, Especially in Peak Season

During school holidays and peak weekends, hire gear books out. Coronet Peak is the closer and more accessible of the two Queenstown ski fields, which makes it a first choice for a lot of visitors — and that demand is reflected in how quickly availability fills up in July and August.

Booking your hire in advance means your gear is reserved and ready. Walk in on the day and you may find yourself limited to what is left.

Night Skiing and Gear Pickup

Coronet Peak is the only ski field in Queenstown offering night skiing, running on Wednesdays, Fridays, and selected Saturday nights through peak season. If you are heading up for a night session, that is a good opportunity to pick up your hire gear from us beforehand. We are based on Duke Street, a short walk from the ski bus stops, so it fits naturally into the journey up.

Getting to Coronet Peak

Coronet Peak is around 18km from central Queenstown, a 20 to 25-minute drive on a fully sealed road. It is one of the more accessible ski fields in New Zealand and straightforward to get to from anywhere in town.

The ski bus from Duke Street runs directly to Coronet Peak throughout the season. If you are staying centrally, it is a stress-free option that removes the hassle of parking and driving out of the morning entirely — and the bus stop is close to Snowbiz, so picking up gear on the way fits easily into the plan.
